Scott Joanen

Scott Joanen, a New Orleans native, is an experienced trial attorney with a diverse professional background.  He began his career as an assistant district attorney in New Orleans, LA, and was quickly promoted to the position of lead counsel in the felony trial division, participating in over 40 jury trials and 100 judge trials.  Thereafter he entered private practice where his multistate practice has resulted in numerous successful first chair jury trials in both Louisiana and California.

Following hurricane Katrina, Scott was included in the membership of two trial teams that presented cases to Judge Stanwood R. Duval for the consolidated matters involving the claims of hundreds of thousands of businesses and individuals for their losses resultant from the widespread flooding of New Orleans due to the levee/flood wall failures.  Scott was the first chair attorney for 20 depositions and second chair attorney for 22 depositions.  Additionally, he was first chair attorney for 7 trial witnesses and second chair attorney for 8 trial witnesses (including multiple experts).

Thereafter, Scott was integrally involved in all aspects of briefing to the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals for the In Re Katrina Canal Breaches Consolidated Litigation.  He was also included as additional counsel of record for contributions to the Plaintiffs’ Petition for Writ of Certiorari in the Supreme Court of the United States, Docket No. 12-1092.

Scott’s experience has resulted in his selection to author briefing and provide oral argument to multiple appellate courts, including numerous presentations to the U.S. Fifth Circuit.  He has been retained by Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee’s in mass tort/class action proceedings to author pleadings and secure deposition testimony on behalf of discovery and trial teams.  In addition, Scott has been selected to present oral argument to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict litigation.

Scott’s first party insurance experience was honed in the mass actions against insurers that failed to adequately adjust the claims of their insureds after hurricane Katrina.  During that litigation, Scott was engaged in the successful resolution of approximately 7,400 first party insurance claims.
